Entering into Partnership--Churches and Habitat for Humanity: A Common Goal

Habitat for Humanity (HFH) is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness WORLDWIDE and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat is founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent, affordable place to live in dignity and safety. Habitat volunteers are following Jesus' example of caring and compassion for all people.

Habitat has an open-door policy: all who desire to be a part of this work are welcome, regardless of religious preference or background. Habitat for Humanity has always had a policy of building with people regardless of race or religion, as we welcome volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds.

The work of HFH is driven by the desire to give tangible expression to the love of God through the work of eliminating poverty housing. Habitat for Humanity and churches seek to serve God by serving our neighbors in need. Habitat homeowners benefit from the prayer, funding and volunteer support that churches provide, while the religious community enjoys the many benefits of working in partnership.

* Churches see their ministry come alive when they reach out to help others.

* Building houses offers a unique opportunity for the church community to experience faith in new and exciting ways.

* Each house that Habitat builds is a concrete manifestation of Christian love and hope that is visible throughout the community.

North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity has a Church Relations Committee with six members. The committee is working to foster new relationships and to nurture existing relations with the approximately 130 churches/communities of faith that exist in our affiliate area. Nurturing a new or old relationship requires some face to face time spent with the pastoral leader of the group. This visiting has been happening, but only a small percentage of churches have been reached so far. The committee would welcome any new members who would desire to help HFH become better known by the communities of faith in our area. Call us at (218) 749-8910 or Toll-free at (866)749-8910 to become a member of this ministry.

Team NSLCHFH gearing up to pedal another 500 miles to raise funds for 2008 construction projects

Ten cyclists will reap the benefits of their spring training to be able to bike 500 miles each this summer at the 16th annual Habitat 500 bike ride fundraiser put on by Habitat for Humanity of Minnesota. The ride begins on July 13th and continues through the 19th. The looped route will take the approximaely 130 riders through the heart of Minnesota.

The tour kicks-off on Sunday in Monticello and heads south and west to Hutchinson. On Monday, the tour heads west to New London, on the shores of Lake Mill Pond. On Tuesday, the bikers will ride 100 miles through the Missisippi Rier Valley to Little Falls. On Wednesday the bike trail will be on scenic country roads in the heart of lake country. There will be a rest stop in Pierz, a favorite Habitat 500 Community. The day will end in Onamia where the bikers will spend two night hosted by East Central Habitat for Humanity.

Thursday will be an optional riding day. Riders can choose to help construct and raise walls on the 1600th Habitat home in Minnesota, take the day off, or ride a looped route around Mille Lacs Lake - one of the largest lakes in the state. Friday's destination is the small 100-year old town German town of Foley, the site for the Jensen family's Habitat home. Saturday will be a short mileage day back through the Mississippi River Valley. Riders will be welcomed back to Monticello with a wonderful celebration..

ABOUT THE HABITAT 500 BIKE RIDE.
The Habitat 500 is a pledged, fully supported 500 mile bike ride benefiting Habitat for Humanity. The minimum amount to be raised by each rider is $850. During the past 15 years, the ride has raised over $3.2 million for Habitat home construction in Minnesota, the United States and around the world. Our goal is to raise $5000,000 in 2008!

Just 3 percent of the funds raised are used for ride expenses. This is due to the strong volunteer base and donations of food and other supplies. Ride costa are all inclusive, from staff salaries to supplies to rental fees. Sponsorships and rider registration fees offset total ride costs and the remaining costs are covered from funds raised by the riders.

For more infomation on the Habitat 500 Bike Ride please visit www.habitat500.org or give our office a call at 218-749-8910 or Toll Free at 866-749-8910.

Local cyclists in 2008 are Doug and Christy Gettle of Britt, Jon Siman of Eveleth, Caroline Owens of Ely, Emma Jaynes of Hibbing, Tom Keeler of Hibbing, Brian and Philip Birk Aurora/Tower, Nathan Thompson of Gilbert and David Bergum of Ely. Our thanks goes out to these riders who pay a registration fee to participate in the ride and then raise funds for our local Habitat projects: this year in Aurora, Hibbing, Soudan and Virginia.

A fundraising newsletter has just been put out to highlight each of these riders and the families they are helping to become homeowners. Please check out the Newsletter for further details.

Please consider a donation to North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity to sponsor these riders as they raise funds for the 2008 Construction season. A prayer for the riders safety and success would aslo be appreciated.

Many thanks to our wonderful business partners!

“The pace at which Habitat affiliates, friends and volunteers are building houses is truly astonishing. Every 21 minutes, Habitat completes another house somewhere in the world. Around the clock and around the globe, Habitat volunteers are picking up hammers or trowels and turning them into tools of compassion.

So many wonderful things are happening because of the commitment and involvement of dedicated partners everywhere. Habitat partners are changing lives across the globe every day in so many ways.”
