Thrivent Builds & NSLCHFH Partnership Continues in 2010

Posted: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

Since 2005, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, through its alliance with Habitat for Humanity, has given more than 1,000 families the opportunity to build and own a decent, affordable home. In the process, strong bonds of friendship have been built and lives have been changed. This year Thrivent is partnering with our affiliate once again on a home in Virginia.

Shannon Hendricks and her two sons, DJ (2) and Rylee (8) will be the family building and moving into the Thrivent home. Shannon currently lives in an apartment in Mt. Iron and is a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Shannon, who has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), is really looking forward to building with Habitat and Thrivent. “It really means a lot to me to be building with Habitat and Thrivent. Owning a Habitat home will mean that my boys will have a safe place to play and live and if my MS does progress my home will be accessible for me. Also my boys are really looking forward to getting a puppy and having a yard to play in.” We anticipate starting on the home this Fall.

Thrivent uses these grants to encourage Lutherans to partner with Habitat for Humanity. The grants require local Lutheran congregations to fund 10 % of the cost of the home. They also require half of the volunteers to be Lutheran and half of the Lutheran volunteers to be members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Thrivent provides 65% of the cost of the home. Local Lutheran congregations provide 10% and our Habitat for Humanity affiliate will need to raise 25%.

We are already in the process of planning fundraising events with local Lutheran congregations. We will do our best to inform people about the particulars once they are planned. In addition to the fundraising events there will be a number of Lutherans riding their bicycles in the Habitat 500 bike ride which will be touring our service area this year, with the Bike.Home located at our Hibbing site.

I hope that many people will take the opportunity to volunteer on the building of this home. I hope many more will participate in the fund raising events, like the Habitat 500 bike ride. If you want to participate in the building of this home or the fundraising events please stop by or call the office at 866.749.8910.

Let's all do our part and turn this home into a dream come true for the Hendricks family!
