Habitat for Humanity marked a major milestone last November when construction began on the homebuilding ministry’s 300,000th house in Naples, Fla., and 300,001st house in Zacapa, Guatemala. These homes mark a decade of major growth for Habitat for Humanity, which was founded in 1976 and here in North St. Louis County in 1995. Thirty (30) of these homes have been built right here in thirteen communities across North St. Louis County, a milestone which will be celebrated at the organization’s annual “Building the Future with Habitat Dinner and Silent Auction” to be held on February 6th at the Mt Iron Community Center. For more information about the event, or to order tickets, please call 866.749.8910.
The thirtieth home in North St. Louis County was built in Aurora this fall in partnership with new Habitat homeowners: Joe, Kathy, and Annabelle. It began in a storm of activity at the Build Blitz on August 5th with the donation of labor by the Olympic Framers. Volunteers finished this simple, decent, affordable home this fall and winter, led by volunteer building supervisors Rev. Brian Birk and Jim Flanagan.
“The Aurora home is a shining example of volunteers coming together to meet a family’s basic need of affordable housing. The fact that volunteers have rallied together since 1995 to build 30 homes in 13 communities across North St. Louis County, enabling 121 people in 30 families to afford their own homes, is amazing,” said Nathan Thompson, Executive Director, North St. Louis County Habitat.
“It’s truly an extraordinary accomplishment to reach the 300,000th house milestone, and countless partners have played a vital role in that,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO, Habitat for Humanity International. “Throughout this journey, so many lives have been changed -- from the families who now live in decent homes to the volunteers whose hard work and compassion have helped build them. However, as much as we have to celebrate, we are equally humbled by the extent of the housing problem worldwide. We realize we have so much more to do, and we’ll continue building upon the momentum that each of these 300,000 homes has helped generate.”
North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity, while celebrating these huge landmarks, has its gaze continually focused on the housing problem in our communities and is currently planning builds with another four families in 2009. The affiliate is also seeking homeowner applicants for another 2009 project in Hibbing and a rehab in Virginia next fall. The selection process has started for home building projects across North St. Louis County in 2010 as well.
You are invited to celebrate this milestone with Habitat for Humanity at the annual “Building the Future with Habitat” dinner and silent auction. This elegant evening will include music from the Virginia-Eveleth-Gilbert High School Orchestra, an enticing silent auction, and a delicious dinner of chicken duxelles en croute prepared by Chefs Keith Hassl and Dennis Purkat. The program will feature North St. Louis County’s first partner family. Call 866.749.8910 to purchase tickets to keep “Building the Future with Habitat”.
