A Lenten Tradition to Support Habitat

Posted: 2009-04-16 00:00:00

This spring six churches in Aurora, Hoyt Lakes, Palo, and Biwabik continued a beautiful Lenten tradition of worshipping together each Wednesday and supporting Habitat through those Lenten service offerings.

This year the United Methodist Church of Aurora, Trinity United Methodist Church in Hoyt Lakes, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Palo, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Aurora, the Community United Church of Christ in Biwabik, and the Evangelical Covenant Church in Biwabik took turns rotating between the participating churches each Wednesday, worshipping together as an ecumenical community.

Nathan Thompson, executive director of North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity, attended several of the Lenten services this year: “My wife, daughter and I had a wonderful time at our first ever Lenten Soup Supper! What a wonderful time to enjoy a simple meal with great fellowship as we reflected on Christ. I was warmed by the many familiar faces we knew in this group and by all the friendly smiles of those we came to know through this Lenten tradition. Habitat has been truly blessed through the efforts of these congregations.”

The rotating services began about four year ago. There was an immediate question as to where the offering would be designated. Habitat, as an ecumenical Christian ministry, was suggested as a potential designee, and has since remained the grateful recipient of these generous offerings.

The Lenten offerings are one of the largest church donations Habitat receives. This year offerings have totaled a record $2,288.45, bringing the total over four years to about $6,300!

Habitat is grateful to have such a continual and dedicated base of support in the East Range region. This support was vital in the completion of the first Habitat home in Aurora last year with Habitat homeowners Joe, Kathy, and Annabelle. The support is ever encouraging as we prepare to build with the Jackson family this summer. Thank you for supporting Habitat for Humanity. We look forward to working with you on a build this summer!
