As Deniese has said, "Home is where your heart is." Habitat understands that, for many families, the heart of the home is in the kitchen.
Habitat for Humanity has collected hundreds of recipes from Habitat affiliates all over the world, available in three great cookbooks. We thought we'd share a delicious recipe from these cookbooks each week. Try them out and let us know what you think! Applesauce Brownies

 

Yield: 15 servings 

Ingredients:
2 cups flour
2 tablespoons baking cocoa
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup margarine, softened
2 eggs
1 3/4 cups applesauce
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 cup chocolate chips

  • Sift flour, baking cocoa, baking soda, salt and cinnamon together. Cream 3/4 cup sugar, brown sugar and margarine in mixer bowl until light and fluffy. eat in eggs. Add flour mixture and applesauce alternately to creamed mixture, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla. Spoon into nonstick 9x13-inch baking pan. Mix 2 tablespoons sugar, chopped pecans and chocolate chipsin bowl. Sprinkle mixture over dough. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool. Cut into squares.
