Act! Speak! Build! Week 2009: Making Housing a Matter of Action

Posted: 2009-03-30 08:57:10

More than 200 youth groups around the world are creating awareness about poverty housing this week (March 30-April 5) as part of Habitat for Humanity’s annual Act! Speak! Build! Week. This year, groups from the United States, Canada and Uganda will plan activities around the theme “Make Housing a Matter of Action.”

As part of the activities, groups will implement at least one of four recommended campaign activities: a large-scale housing advocacy campaign, a candlelight vigil, a visual representation of a current poverty statistic or a housing simulation. Act! Speak! Build! Week is one of many programs that engages volunteers, including youth, in Habitat’s mission to provide simple, decent and affordable homes.

“Every year, youth groups raise their voices about the need to eliminate substandard housing conditions and to help make affordable housing possible,” said Desiree Adaway, Habitat’s senior director of Volunteer Mobilization. “We are grateful that so many people are concerned about these issues and are committed to making a difference in their communities.”

Habitat for Humanity’s youth programs work to capture the imagination, energy and hope of young people. We are so excited that youth on the Iron Range are very active in North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity.

Through the Applied Learning Institute students from Hibbing, Chisholm, and Nashwauk Keewatin are building the Firebaugh home in Hibbing this winter. Students from Iron Range Youth in Action volunteer their time at builds and also take on the role as servers at Habitat's annual Winter Dinner. And the confirmation class from Gethsemane and Our Savior's Lutheran churches in Virginia volunteered one Wednesday evening to color all of the Church Relations posters.

We thank our youth for their joyful energy and enthusiasm. And we invite all other youth groups to volunteer with Habitat and advocate for affordable, sustainable housing solutions. Whether it be sponsoring a Act! Speak! Build! activitity or volunteering at a build site, Habitat needs you! Email vista@nslchfh.org or call 866.749.8910 to learn more.
