As Deniese has said, "Home is where your heart is." Habitat understands that, for many families, the heart of the home is in the kitchen.

Habitat for Humanity has collected hundreds of recipes from Habitat affiliates all over the world, available in three great cookbooks. We thought we'd share a delicious recipe from these cookbooks each week. Try them out and let us know what you think! State Fair Spinach Salad
This recipe won a blue ribbon at the 1991 South Caroline State Fair!

Yield: 6 servings

1 Granny Smith apple, thinly sliced
1 cup orange juice
10 ounces fresh spinach, torn, chilled
1 medium tomato, cut into wedges
4 slices bacon, crisp-fried, crumbled
1/3 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup mayonnaise

  • Combine apple slices with orange juice in bowl. Place spinach in large salad bowl. Drain apple slices, reserving 1/2 cup orange juice. Arrange tomato wedges and apple slices over spinach. Sprinkle bacon and walnuts in center. Blend reserved orange juice with mayonnaise in bowl. Drizzle over salad.
