North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity feels blessed to be part of an amazing network of Habitat affiliates within Habitat International. With the recognition of this wonderful brand name, however, sometimes come a set of false assumptions. Habitat hopes to counter these false ideas in a series of "Myths and Truths" published each Tuesday.

MYTH: Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter started Habitat for Humanity.

TRUTH: Habitat for Humanity International was started in Americus, Georgia, in 1976 by Millard Fuller, along with his wife, Linda. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalyn, are longtime Habitat supporters and volunteers who help bring national and international attention to the organization’s house-building work. They lead the annual Jimmy Carter work project to help build house and raise awareness of the need for affordable housing. Since the first work project in 1984, more than 2,500 houses have been built in conjunction with JCWP events.
