The summer leadership staff from Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry spent Saturday, May 23rd at the Rehab in Virginia. They removed everything from the house in preparation for the high school students who will be rehabbing this home in the fall. This summer the staff will be serving at Camp Vermilion in Cook, Camp Hiawatha in Deer River, and at daycamps in congregations across the Iron Range. But May 23rd, as part of their leadership training, they fully devoted themselves to the issue of affordable housing in partnership with North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity.
Pastor Amy Eisenmann from St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Palo kicked off the day with a great devotion. Then, with characteristic energy and enthusiasm, the staff conquered each pile of garbage. Recyclables were sorted into tidy, labeled bags. Everything that could potentially be reused was put in the garage for temporary storage. Even the old, heavy appliances were easily removed by this driven and dedicated crew.
While we had set aside the entire morning for the project, we vastly underestimated the staff’s initiative and speed. Their passion and joy was contagious, and in less than two hours the entire home was emptied and cleaned!
